Cycling in Rheinhessen

The Fruit Route brings you through the orchards of Rheinhessen, along fruit farms, vegetable fields and winegrowing villages. It consists of a western and an eastern loop of 30 km each, connected by a 7 km stretch following the Selztal valley. Enjoy an unobstructed view of Eltville and Rheingau, the Taunus mountain range and the beautiful landscape of Selz.

Amiche and Vatinche were two small trains that connected the historic vineyard villages along the well-known Roter Hang strip with its distinctive red soil. The Amiche ran from Alzey to Bodenheim. Today, you can cycle along the path of the former railway without ever encountering a steep incline, except at the very beginning. There are many vantage points with a great view over the majestic Rhine. Vineyard taverns along the way make sure that you will not go thirsty. This is the area where some of the best Riesling grapes are produced.

The European cycle route along the Rhine is 1230 km long. Two of its daily stages lead through Rheinhessen from Bingen am Rhein via Mainz to Worms, a city closely associated with the Nibelungs. For more than 90 km, you cycle along the majestic river with heavy ship traffic. The route leads through wetlands along oxbow lakes, world-famous vineyards and many historic winegrowing villages. In Bingen, it joins the Nahe Cycle Route.

There might not be exactly 1000 hills or "Hiwwels" in this area, but the figure is not far off. Along the 164 km Hiwwel Route, you will cycle over quite a few of them. From Bingen in the north-west via Mainz to Wörrstadt and Alzey in the heart of Rheinhessen, and on to Worms, the route consists of two sweeps through the region that can be easily completed over four days. This route is highly recommended for all who wish to get to know Rheinhessen in all its aspects. It intersects with various other topical routes through Rheinhessen, which makes planning your trip even more exciting. At the point where the Nahe river flows into the Rhine at Bingen, known as the gate to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, the Hiwwel Route meets the national Nahe Cycle Route and the Rhine Cycle Route.
