Beer & brewing

Eisgrubbräu

The home-brewed, naturally cloudy beer of Eisgrub Bräu is reason enough to visit this traditional tavern in the old city centre. Mikhail Gorbachev and the former Foreign Minister of Germany Hans-Dietrich Genscher were here more than once, enjoying a cold beer together and chatting with the regulars.

Until ice could be produced artificially, the premises of this tavern served as the ice cellar of the city. In the Second World War, the cellar was turned into an air raid shelter, and then briefly became a wine cellar. In 1989, the first pub brewery in Mainz took over the vaulted rooms dating from 1872.

Rheinhessenbräu

The Karl family has always embraced both tradition and progress. What started as a tillage farm in 1820 is now a mixed business producing not only vegetables and grain, but also wine and, since 2007, beer. For these special tipples, the family processes its own spring barley – for quality from spike to glass.

The Rheinhessen-Bräu beers are unfiltered, cloudy brews free of preservatives and produced without heat treatment. This means that they contain the full flavours of yeast, as well as all the proteins, minerals and vitamins of the raw ingredients. They are of course produced according to the "Reinheitsgebot", or the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. The gold-blond Rheinhessen-Bräu Hell, the full-bodied Rheinhessen-Bräu Dunkel and the dark-gold Rheinhessen-Bräu Hefe-Weizen are available all year round. The seasonal special beers include the Maibock, the Festbier, and a Winterbock as well as many other inspired creations.

At Rheinhessen-Bräu, the top-quality tipples can be purchased directly from the brew house. Its products are also available in supermarkets, off-licenses, taverns, and of course at stalls during one of the many festivals taking place in Mainz.
