Mainz: The Golden City

A classic guided tour of the cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum and the Old Town. For more than 1000 years St. Martin's Cathedral has shaped the cityscape of Mainz.

A short walk away is the Gutenberg Museum, a main attraction which includes the world famous 42-line Bible as well as the historic printing press. Afterwards, your route will lead you to the historic old town, to its half-timbered houses, picturesque corners and squares.

Underground - The Mainzer Zitadelle (Citadel of Mainz)

The citadel on the Jakobsberg, built around 1660 in its current form, was a central component of the Mainz fortress. There is a lot to discover - on, in, next to, and under the mighty building, e.g. Roman monuments, two museums, and the remains of a monastery.

Mysterious cathedral and cathedral treasury

In the cathedral and the newly designed treasure chamber in the historic Nikolauskapelle we discover the seven sacraments in words and deeds, places and works, companions at turning points in the life of a Christian. You touch on basic questions of Catholicism: What does it mean to settle as a Catholic? And don't be afraid of theologian German! The tour chooses an understandable and, in the truest sense of the term, tangible approach - even for non-Catholics.

Grave monuments in the Mainz Cathedral

No other church in the former Holy Roman Empire houses so many archiepiscopal grave monuments. They testify to a culture of remembrance and religiosity. Oddities, curious stories, and impressive life stories give a special insight into 1,000 years of the Mainz church, city, and art history.

Magenza: The Jewish Mainz

The Jewish community in Mainz was not only the starting point for Western Judaism, but also the centre of Jewish culture and learning in association with the communities of Worms and Speyer. Follow in the footsteps of Jewish Mainz with an experienced tour guide. Upon request, it can also be booked with a visit to the New Synagogue against a donation.

Mainz, together with Speyer and Worms, has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO Committee in July 2021. The ShUM cities are thus Germany's first Jewish World Heritage Site.
