Beer

Mainz is not only the wine capital of Germany, the art of brewing is also deeply anchored in the city's history. As early as the mid-19th century, there were more than 40 breweries in the city. Today you can still enjoy beer in the partially active or former breweries.

Find out more about our wide range of beer tours in and around Mainz in this section.

Eisgrubbräu

The home-brewed, naturally cloudy beer alone is reason enough to visit this rustic inn in the old town. Gorbatschow and Genscher were of this opinion when they came to Mainz together - and much to the delight of the other guests - came to the Eisgrubbräu.

Until the development of the ice machine, the city's ice cellars were located here. During the Second World War, the premises were used as an air raid shelter, and later for a short time as a wine store. In 1989 the first Mainz brewery opened in the listed vaulted cellars from 1872.

Rheinhessenbräu

The name Karl stands for tradition and progress in equal measure - what emerged in around 1820 as a purely agricultural operation is now a Rhine-Hessian mixed operation, in which the Rheinhessenbräu brewery was added as a further mainstay in 2007. They continue to do viticulture and agriculture. The specially grown spring barley is processed into beer here - from the stalk into the glass, so to speak.

The brewing result is unfiltered, naturally cloudy beer that contains no preservatives and is not heat-treated. Valuable aromatic substances such as yeast, proteins, minerals, and vitamins are retained and give our beer its extraordinary taste. And of course, all Rheinhessenbräu beers are brewed according to the German purity law of 1516.

You can assure yourself of the consistently high quality of the beers when you buy them directly in the brewhouse. Rheinhessenbräu is also available in various grocery stores, specialist beverage dealers, in restaurants, and at various festivals.
