Rheinhessen Highlights

Mainz is known as being the wine capital of Germany. More than 2,000 years ago, the Romans planted their first grape vines in the fields of what is now Germany's largest wine region with almost 27,000 hectares - Rheinhessen.

The next wine-growing region, the Rheingau, is only a few kilometres away across the Rhine.

In cooperation with vintners in Rheinhessen and Rheingau, we offer various tours through the beautiful landscape and the vineyards. In addition to the excursions into the countryside, we offer you numerous vintner menus, wine tastings, or wine workshops.

Drive to the Rheingau

The Rheingau region lies between Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim, to the right of the Rhine. Your first stop is the Eberbach Monastery, a former Cistercian monastery. This is where the interior shots for the film "The Name of the Rose" were shot. After a short drive you will reach Rüdesheim. A guided city tour and a ride on the cable car to the Niederwald monument are on the programme. A stroll through the famous "Drosselgasse" completes your excursion. (Subject to change)

Services: Accompanied by qualified tour guides, entrance fees, one-way trip with the cable car to the Niederwald monument
Duration: 6 hours
Price per person: 27€
Minimum number of participants: 15 people

Your own coach is required to conduct the trip - we are happy to help you with the rental.

Wine & indulgence in Rheinhessen

In Rheinhessen, the largest wine-growing region in Germany, the wines of the vintners mature: authentic, hand-made, and hard to beat in terms of variety. Many young, innovative vintners are at work, committed to producing first-class wines with great awareness of their roots and their region.

The passion that is put into the work in the cellars is also reflected in the kitchens of the region. As with the winemakers, the chefs are also becoming more aware of regional cuisine, for products from the region in harmony with selected wines.

The most pleasant way to get to know Rheinhessen wine is to visit one of the vinotheques that have been awarded the "Rheinhessen EXCELLENT" seal of approval. Guests who stop here can not only expect excellent wines by the glass, but also receive a lot of information and tips about wine or the most beautiful excursions and places.

Rheinhessen, also known as the "land of a thousand hills", is the sunniest and largest wine-growing region in Germany and stands for fruity, sparkling white wines. 70% of the vineyard area is planted with white wine varieties.

The variety of wine in Rheinhessen is unbeatable and every wine lover will find the right one for their taste. When it comes to white wine varieties, the Müller-Thurgau vine is at the top in terms of volume. In second place is the undisputed queen of the vines, Riesling. In third place is the Silvaner, which can be found today as a regional specialty on many wine lists. Rheinhessen has the largest Silvaner cultivation area in the world.

The other thirty percent of the Rhine-Hessian vineyard area is accounted for by the red wine varieties. Dornfelder leads the ranks with 13% of the total vineyard area. Blue Portuguese and Pinot Noir follow and form a strong red wine range alongside Regent and a handful of other grape varieties.

The cities of Worms and Mainz were founded in Roman times. Worms was later shaped by Martin Luther, and Mainz by its elector and Johannes Gutenberg with the invention of the printing press.

Today Rheinhessen stands for liveliness, openness, and cheerfulness. Its residents carry this identity on with their sympathetic way of life. As part of the anniversary year 2016, the surrounding area also felt the effects of these characteristics and was highly influenced by their cheerful way of life. Therefore, it is time to celebrate the history and culture of the Rheinhessen region and combine old roots with new changes.
