Dom St. Martin - "Fastnachtsbeichte"

St. Martin's Cathedral

The landmark of the city, the 2000 year old Mainz Cathedral, also plays a starring role in a novella by the well-known local author Carl Zuckmayer. On Shrove Tuesday 1913, in the middle of the Mainz Carnival, a man in a dragoon uniform enters the cathedral to confess, but collapses dead after his first sentence. Following two further confessions  that unmask the Mainz high society, the murderer is determined and the cathedral and the city return to the tranquility of post-Carnival Lent.

Frankfurter Hof

Frankfurter Hof – Frankfurt Court

Then as now, the Frankfurter Hof is a popular event location: it was here in the 19th century that the new Carnival Society first met and thus inaugurated the Mainz Carnival. The first rhyming speeches from the lectern ("Bütt" - "soapbox") were a mix of local gossip and nonsense and soon also about politics. To this day, this political-literary expression is one of the unmistakable trademarks of the Mainz Carnival.

Staatstheater Mainz

Mainz State Theatre

Since the beginning of Carnival in 1838, "buffoonery" has been performed here during the main festivals of the "fifth season" – as the locals call Carnival. The plays have entertaining plots and are loud, crude and hilarious. Particularly successful farces were “Hurra, mir erwe” ("Hurray, we're inheriting") and “Babbel nit” ("Don't babble").

Fastnachtsbrunnen

Carnival Fountain

Over 200 figures adorn the Fastnachtsbrunnen (Carnival Fountain), which is a symbol of the typical Mainz vitality. During the Mainz Carnival the world is upside down and so the bubbling tower of fools represents the inverted spire of the cathedral - the landmark of Mainz. Can you find the man washing his purse in the hope that it will be filled with money once he has cleaned it in the Rhine

Fastnachtsmuseum

Carnival Museum

Fool's caps, medals etc. – the Carnival Museum presents 160 years of Mainz Carnival history including highlights of the famous live television broadcast "Mainz remains Mainz as it sings and laughs" shown on national television. This is where you get to know the people of Mainz best.
