Mainz still has very much the air of a fortified city. Along the route, you learn about the eventful history of the city, which is reflected in its walls and fortifications. The 21 km walk brings you through the city centre and adjacent districts to Kastel. There are 20 points of special interest – from Roman times, to the Middle Ages and the 19th century federal fortification – along the route. They are marked on the map, with detailed explanations in the brochure. The "Festungsroute" brochure is available at the Tourist Service Center at Brückenturm (price € 0.50).
Duration: 1:20 hours
Cycle through Mainz, Kostheim and Hochheim. On this wine-themed cycle tour across three bridges, you learn all about wine-making while enjoying a magnificent ride through vineyards ending in a wine-tasting get-together. The 20 km round trip is not strenuous, and if the climb becomes too steep, you can simply push the bike. At Weingut Bacchus-Speicher surrounded by vineyards, you get a tour of the premises with three wine tastings, ample water and pretzels. The tour finishes on the bank of the Rhine near the City Hall.
