State Theatre

In the heart of Mainz's city center, right at Gutenbergplatz, the Staatstheater is an integral part of the cultural life. This multi-venue house combines opera, drama, concerts, and contemporary dance, continually setting new artistic accents with its program. In addition to major classics, contemporary works, premieres, and interdisciplinary productions are featured. For its outstanding artistic work, the Staatstheater Mainz was chosen "Opera House of the Year" by the professional magazine Opernwelt in 2026.

The various performance venues also have their own character. In addition to the Great and Small House, the U17 studio stage offers space deep underground for smaller productions and experimental formats. A special view of the Mainz Cathedral is provided by the glass house on the roof of the Great House.

The Staatstheater is dedicated to its young audience with “justmainz.” Original productions for children and teenagers, workshops, and theater educational offerings make theater accessible even outside of traditional performances. Particularly popular is the large family piece during the Christmas season, which is an essential part of the year's end for many Mainz families.

The traditional carnival farce of the Mainz Carnival Association (MCV) is also closely linked to the city's culture. It brings a hefty portion of Mainz humor and local color to the stage of the Great House each year during carnival season.

With “tanzmainz,” the Staatstheater also has an internationally oriented ensemble for contemporary dance. Collaborations with choreographers from all over the world shape its artistic profile. The regularly occurring “tanzmainz festival” turns Mainz into a meeting point for the international dance scene.
