Johannes Gutenberg is the inventor of movable type printing in Europe. Born in Mainz, he started the Printing Revolution, which is considered a cultural milestone of the second millennium. Thanks to his ground-breaking invention, information and knowledge suddenly became available to a much greater portion of society, ushering in the modern period of human history – Renaissance, Reformation, the Age of Enlightenment, and the scientific revolution. In Mainz, you can find many monuments dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg, such as the statue on Gutenbergplatz and of course the world-famous Gutenberg Museum with its historic printing presses and one of the few surviving copies of the Gutenberg Bible.
The museum provides a comprehensive introduction to the life and work of Johannes Gutenberg.
